The best 27 students out of the 185 that sat for the zonal finals of the Maltina Reading Competition across the nation have qualified for the final stage of the competition that will take place between January 24 and 26, 2010 in Abuja.
To qualify, students were tested on 3 sets of books namely, Burma Boy by Biyi Bandele, Letter to an Unborn Child by Abubakar Gimba and The Leopard by Victor Reid as well as aptitude questions on general knowledge.
Speaking to the participants during the competition at the Abeokuta centre in South West Zone, the CSR/Public Affairs Manager, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Vivian Ikem advised the students to take their work seriously and to be interested in general information that comes their way in the course of their studies in order to become average students. "It is with this view in mind that NBPLC is sponsoring this competition because at the end of the day, readers are leaders", he said.
At the end of the competition, cash prizes of N50,000, N40,000 and N30,000 were giving to the winner, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up respectively from each zone center. Similarly book prizes worth of N150,000, N100,000 and N80,000 were awarded to their respective winning schools.
Each of the 27 students that qualified for the National Finals in Abuja has been given three new sets of books that they expected to read for the final stage of the competition. Students will also be tested on aptitude tests. In addition to winning mouth watering prizes, the children will also have an opportunity to interact with some famous authors.
